Fireplace and Chimney Cleaning in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Why is chimney sweeping important?

Chimney sweeping began more than two centuries ago and remains just as relevant then as it is today. Owning a fireplace comes with maintenance and upkeep to make sure it is being safely used. As wood is burned, smoke rises out of the flue and after each burn, creosote (or soot) will start to gather. Failure to remove the substance frequently can start a build-up of creosote which significantly increases the chances of a chimney fire. Avoid the risk by calling to have a chimney sweep clear the inside of your flue.

What are the chimney inspection regulations?

Before honoring warranties, most manufacturers require consumers to follow regulations set forth by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). For stoves that run on wood or bio-fuel pellets, the NFPA recommends an annual sweep. As for masonry fireplaces and factory-built fireplaces, the association expects those to be cleaned when the soot level becomes 1/8 of an inch thick on the chimney’s inside walls.

When should you get the fireplace cleaned?

Per the NFPA’s Code 211,

Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.

It’s advised you have your fireplace and chimney checked annually, even if you rarely use them. Other responsibilities of fireplace and chimney ownership is making sure there are not any additional issues such as broken dampers, debris blocking the flue, or faulty air shutters.

Levels of Inspection We Offer

Level 1 – Level 1 satisfies the annual inspection. It is a thorough visual scan of the external parts of the fireplace.

Level 2 – Level 2 is a combination of Level 1 with a live video scan of the internal parts to check for debris, build up, and damage. The NFPA 211 requires this level of inspection for new homeowners as well as property managers (when property ownership changes) and realtors.

Maintenance for the Dryer Vents of Grand Rapids

Why is dryer vent cleaning important?

The debris blown out by your dryer every time you use the clothes dryer is dry and hot. If the electrical heat ignites the lint, you will have a fire that could lead to property damage costing thousands of dollars.

When should the dryer vent be cleaned?

Your dryer’s ventilation should be cleaned out once a year. The area surrounding the vent should be inspected every 6 months to be sure there is no damage. Tiny holes may develop in the flexible connector behind the dryer causing dust or monoxide to enter the residence. Plastic flexible connectors are not code and must be replaced with semi-rigid aluminum or a similar type of UL Listed product.
