Fireplace and Chimney Cleaning Service in Los Angeles, California

Why Is Annual Chimney Sweeping Important?

Chimney sweeping has been around for more than two centuries, but the reason for its importance has never changed. As you burn wood in your fireplace, soot rises into your chimney and accumulates. If you don’t clean that substance away regularly, a chimney fire might result.

What Are the Chimney Inspection Regulations for Southern California?

The answer applies throughout the United States. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that homeowners should have their chimneys and fireplaces checked annually. With regard to stoves that burn wood and bio-fuel pellets, an inspection and cleaning should happen once the soot level thickens to at least 1/8”.

The following is the NFPA’s official statement concerning regulations:

Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.

Chimney Inspections when Buying or Selling a Home in California

The National Fire Protection Association (abbreviation NFPA)  provides guidance for 3 levels of fireplace and chimney inspections. The three inspection levels increase in their invasiveness as the numbers increase; for example, Level II inspections are more involved than a Level I inspection, and Level III is more involved than a Level II chimney inspection. Following is a brief description of the most common two chimney inspections that our certified Chimney Professionals can offer you.

  • Level I Chimney Inspections

This is your annual chimney inspection performed with every chimney sweep. Level 1 inspections meet the annual inspection requirement per NFPA 14.2. It is a thorough visual inspection of all readily accessible portions of the chimney, appliance and connector pipes.

  • Level II Chimney Inspections

This is a more invasive inspection that requires the technician to inspect all accessible portions of the chimney, appliance and flue. This is required for all real estate professionals and property managers who are managing a home sale or transaction. When a residence changes ownership the fuel type changes, or any structural damage has occurred to the home, a Level II Inspection should be ordered. A Level II inspection requires roof access, and a live scan video of the inside of the flue.

San Fernando Valley, California Dryer Vent Cleaning

Dryer vent cleaning in Los Angeles area is important! Your clothes dryer expels debris such as lint and pet hair through the dryer vent duct with each use. If the vent is not cleaned out regularly, the lint and high-heat electric element can combine and cause a fire. An annual inspection will allow you to understand the condition of your clothes dryer’s venting system.

How often should the dryer vent be cleaned?

  • Your dryer’s vent going through the wall and your dryer flex connector should be inspected and cleaned annually.
  • The area surrounding the vent should be visually inspected every 6 months. Holes may occur in the flexible connector behind the clothes dryer causing dust (or monoxide, if it is a gas-fired clothes dryer!) to enter the house.
  • Plastic flexible connectors are not code-approved. They must be replaced with connectors made of semi-rigid aluminum or a similar type of UL-listed material.

Let the professionals at Midtown Chimney Sweeps maintain your dryer vent in the Greater Los Angeles Area today!
