Nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Boulder, Colorado, is where nature and architecture coexist in harmony—and for David and Hanna Sloan, it’s where passion meets purpose. This husband-and-wife duo isn’t just building homes; they’re shaping experiences. With a deep appreciation for the land and a shared eye for timeless design, the Sloans have turned their dream into a thriving business: Sloan Build.
A Shared Vision Rooted in Design
David and Hanna’s story began in architecture school, where their connection was instant—bonded by a love of form, function, and creativity. After graduation, they went their separate ways to develop their craft: David in high-end residential construction and Hanna in architectural and environmental planning. Their individual experiences eventually converged, leading them to launch their own firm right in the heart of Boulder.
“Our mission has always been to create homes that feel like they truly belong to the land,” Hanna explains. “Whether it’s nestled in a pine grove or perched on a rocky hillside, each home should feel integrated—not imposed.”
At Sloan Build, every project is a collaboration between client, land, and design. The result? Custom homes that are both breathtaking and intentional.
Meet the Founders
Dave Sloan — Founder & President
With a journey that began in botany and evolved through carpentry into general contracting, Dave brings an uncommon depth of knowledge—and infectious energy—to every project. He’s a hands-on leader in the Boulder AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) scene and can just as often be found building parade floats for his kids’ elementary school as he is reviewing project specs.
At Sloan Build, Dave is the conductor behind the curtain. He oversees pre-construction planning, manages client relationships, and keeps projects running smoothly. Known for his easygoing personality and encyclopedic knowledge of rare craft beers, Dave is the go-to for cost questions—or just a good conversation.
Hanna Sloan, PE — Chief Operations Officer
Before joining Sloan Build, Hanna was a water resources engineer—a background that gives her a unique edge in both environmental understanding and system design. Dave recruited her to bring structure and strategy to his rapidly growing operation, and today she’s the engine behind the business.
From finance to HR, marketing to design consultations, Hanna manages it all with calm precision. Clients turn to her for everything from material selection to wiring transfers, but it’s her talent for weaving together function and beauty that leaves a lasting impact.
Attention to Detail
What sets the Sloans apart is their unwavering attention to detail. From the very first blueprint to the final finishing touches, they ensure that every element of a home is thoughtfully considered. Their designs feature open floor plans that bring in natural light, sustainable materials that reflect their eco-conscious mindset, and craftsmanship that speaks to their dedication to quality.
One signature feature they incorporate into nearly every home is the Stûv 30 wood stove. Made in Belgium, this modern, high-efficiency stove is both a work of art and a practical heating solution. The Sloans fell in love with the Stûv 30 while designing their own home, where it quickly became the heart of their living space. Now, they encourage every client who wants a wood stove to consider this elegant and powerful model.
“There’s something primal and comforting about a fire,” Dave explains. “The Stûv 30 is not just a heat source—it’s an experience. It transforms the ambiance of a space and brings people together.”
Building with Integrity
At Sloan Build, construction is more than just a craft—it’s a commitment to integrity, collaboration, and long-term relationships. For David and Hanna Sloan, trust is the cornerstone of every project. Whether they’re designing a minimalist mountain retreat or a sprawling estate, the process is always deeply personal. They listen, adapt, and collaborate with their clients to ensure each home reflects their unique vision and lifestyle.
“We don’t just build for our clients,” Hanna says. “We build with them.”
And just as they value strong client relationships, the Sloans also rely on trusted partners who share their high standards. One such partner is Byron Schramm of Midtown Chimney Fireplace Store in Boulder—a name synonymous with quality and precision.
Byron has been a part of the Sloan Build story for years, delivering everything from competitive bids to the seamless installation of high-end fireplaces and stoves. His expertise, particularly with products like the Stûv 30, has helped elevate the warmth—both literal and aesthetic—of many Sloan Build homes.
“Byron just gets it,” Hanna says. “He doesn’t settle for simply placing a stove in the corner. He ensures that each fireplace integrates beautifully into the home’s design, enhancing the space in both function and feel. That attention to detail is rare—and invaluable.”
Creating a Lasting Impact
For Dave and Hanna, building homes isn’t just about brick and timber—it’s about building something that will stand the test of time. Their homes are designed to endure not only Colorado’s changing seasons but also the evolving lives of the families who live within them.
“Every beam, every window, every Stûv 30 we install is part of a bigger story,” says Dave. “We want our homes to feel as though they’ve always belonged to the landscape—and the people who inhabit them.”
Their work has become a defining part of Boulder’s architectural identity: forward-thinking yet grounded, modern yet timeless. And with the continued support of expert collaborators like Byron Schramm, the Sloans are ensuring that every home they build is not only stunning but deeply enduring.
More than just homebuilders, Dave and Hanna Sloan are creating sanctuaries—spaces that nurture family, invite connection, and leave a lasting imprint on Colorado’s most iconic landscapes.
