Frequently Asked Questions
Are There Chimney Inspection Regulations?
You bet! Before honoring their warranties, most manufacturers require consumers to follow the regulations set forth by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). For stoves that burn cord wood and bio-fuel pellets, the recommendation is an annual sweep. Masonry fireplaces and factory-built fireplaces should be cleaned when the soot level reaches 1/8” thick on the inside walls of the chimney.
How Often Does a Fireplace Need to be Cleaned?
The NFPA’s Document 211 reads, “Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.” It’s advised that you have your fireplace checked annually, regardless of how often you use it. Even if you only use your fireplace so often, you ought to arrange an inspection to verify that your chimney and fireplace lack issues such as loose dampers, leaves or nesting debris blocking the flue, or broken air shutters.
Do I Need an Inspection If I Don’t Use my Fireplace Often?
The short answer is, yes! Even if you rarely or never use your fireplace, your chimney is still exposed to the elements, can collect debris, and may develop hidden structural problems. Scheduling a routine chimney inspection can prevent costly repairs, improve home safety, and give you peace of mind—even if your fireplace stays cold all year!
Do Gas Fireplaces Need to Be Cleaned?
Yes! While gas fireplaces burn cleaner than wood-burning fireplaces, they still require regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure safety, efficiency, and longevity. Even though gas burns without producing creosote, dust, soot, and carbon deposits can still accumulate inside the fireplace, on the burner, logs, glass, and venting system.
